The Haunting of Mr. North

In the dark that doth subsist

I heard his laugh upon the mist

Ever adjudged, often dismissed

For Mr. North did not exist

Through his absent thoroughfare

Uncreaking floorboards unaware

Of weight and gate of ghost they bear

For Mr. North was never there

Silent stalkers unrestrained

To haunt the halls of hearts obtained

Still even in those notes sustained

Poor Mr. North was ever feigned

For when those hearts doth seek to mend

Longing for the absent friend

What grief to wear, what hope to spend

Still Mr. North was just pretend

For when the father tried to leave

The wake of vile ache would thieve

The breath of she who might perceive

Still, Mr. North was make-believe

And when the mother sought repeal

And thought her secret could conceal

Her skin did soon begin to peel

For Mr. North was never real

And when the children tried to hide

The crawlers came to coincide

With shadowy watchers to abide

Where Mr. North was not implied

He sang to me in riddles and rhymes

Spoke in measures and in times

His words attuned to bells and chimes

For Mr. North exists sometimes

In that dark that doth subsist

I hear his laugh upon the mist

I fear the ghost who doth persist

Though Mr. North does not exist
